Retail business in a "new normal"

CONSUMERS: Aging Baby Boomers and the Return to the Basics are two Consumer Trends in the US important to Retailers

In a recent speech at a Nielsen Conference, Brian Cornell, CEO of Retailer ‘Sam's Club’ outlined two major consumer trends important to retailing success today:

1) A shifting consumer landscape: Aging baby boomers and young multicultural families, a healthier lifestyle and big part of today’s consumer’s recreation being tied to a keyboard or smartphone.

2) Return to basics, or home economics: Today’s consumer is forced to become much more disciplined. Consumers are trying to simplify their lives by decluttering their homes, giving things away, downsizing to smaller spaces and opting to refresh instead of replace.

Two Trends that could apply to European Consumers, too.
