International media and management career
Christian Gartmann (60) grew up in the Engadin and began his career as a freelance journalist for various radio stations. At the same time, he built up Burton Snowboards’ Swiss distribution business and played a leading role in introducing snowboarding to Europe.
In 1991, after completing his foundation studies in business administration and marketing at the University of St. Gallen, he started as an editor at the regional broadcaster Radio Z in Zurich, now Energy Zurich. In 1996, he moved into the station’s commercial operations and, a few months later, became Managing Director. In this role, he led a successful turnaround to restructure and revive the station.
In 2000, he took responsibility for the entire Swiss business of the ProSiebenSat.1 Group and developed it into the country’s largest non-state television provider, spanning TV, internet, teletext and mobile media.
In 2007, Christian Gartmann joined media marketer PubliGroupe as a member of the executive management team, where he was responsible for the worldwide post-integration of electronic media sales across TV, radio, cinema, internet, mobile media and adscreen. From 2008 to 2009, he was responsible for Media Partner Relations, Marketing & Communications at Publicitas, the “Media Sales” business unit of PubliGroupe.
In 2010, he became self-employed with Christian Gartmann AG under the brand name gartmann.biz. He advises and supports organisations and public figures in crisis management and crisis communications, media relations and public affairs. In addition, he independently designs and moderates conferences and conventions, either on his own behalf or on behalf of his clients.
Christian Gartmann speaks five languages, is the father of two grown sons, and lives in St. Moritz with his partner. In his free time, he is active in sports, including alpine skiing and freeride, bobsleigh and mountain biking. Since 1991, he has held a pilot’s licence for fixed-wing aircraft.
