The Graubünden municipality of Albula/Alvra has intensified planning for an orderly evacuation of the village of Brienz/Brinzauls. The reason is a part of the Brienz slide above the village. The “island” has accelerated significantly in recent weeks and is now endangering the village.

The Brienz slide has mostly calmed down in recent weeks and months. This shows that deep drainage through a tunnel under the landslide can work. Only the “Island” section High above Brienz/Brinzauls has accelerated continuously and strongly. A crash of isle in smaller parts or slipping towards the village have become more likely. Although large rock masses are unlikely to fall, it cannot be ruled out.
A serious event would be on the horizon weeks in advance.
There is no need to expect this in the next few weeks.
However, the municipality of Albula/Alvra and the residents of Brienz/Brinzauls must be prepared for the fact that an event may occur between early summer and the end of 2023 that requires a temporary evacuation* of the village of Brienz/Brinzauls. For Thursday, April 13, the municipality has now invited to an information session. Residents and owners of holiday homes are informed first-hand how the municipality, the canton of Grisons and the specialists and emergency organizations involved are preparing for a possible evacuation.
The event also provides an opportunity to ask questions. The event is open to the public and will Broadcast via live stream via YouTube.
* An evacuation is a temporary departure from the village. It is a precautionary measure for the safety of residents, can be triggered early enough and lifted again after the risk has subsided.
However, it must be expected that such an evacuation could last for several weeks and months.
