A top field at the start of the 49th Engadin Ski Marathon

Numerous world-class runners start the 49th Engadin Ski Marathon on Sunday. In addition to the Grisons Dario Cologna, top runners from Norway, France, Russia and Switzerland have registered, and the Frauenfeld is also heavily staffed. The race is on the original route — the approximately 13,000 participants expect good conditions with mild temperatures and weak winds.

Two double winners and two winners are among the immediate favorites of Sunday's Engadin Ski Marathon. The Grisons Dario Cologna wants to win the Engadin a third time after 2007 and 2010 as the Uri Roman Furger after his victories in the previous year and 2012. In addition, the winners of 2015 and 2014 are also at the start with the Russian Ilia Chernousow and the Norwegian Andres Gløersen.

Frenchmen Jean-Marc Gaillard and Maurice Manificat as well as the two Norwegians Tomas and Even Northug can be counted among the favorites, as are the Swiss Toni Livers, Curdin Perl or Jason Rüesch.

Swiss women Seraina Boner and Rahel Imoberdorf, second and third in last Sunday's women's run, are in good shape. In addition, the German Hanna Kolb and the French Aurelie Dabudyk, fifth in 2016, and Jean Aurore, Olympic diploma winner in 2010 and 2014, should also be noted. The winner of the women's run, the Swede Maria Gräfnings, has also set herself a lot of goals.

Good weather and lots of participants

The weather forecasts suggest good conditions for Marathon Sunday. At the start at minus 5 degrees and a slight headwind, the sun is likely to shine in part, and at noon more clouds may rise. The temperatures on the second half of the route and at the finish line can reach up to three degrees, and a little tailwind can be expected from Samedan.

By Friday morning, more than 13,000 participants have already registered and it is expected that around 13,200 entries will be received — just 300 fewer than in the record year 1998.
