Moseby and Fähndrich win the Engadin

Norwegian Håvard Moseby and Swiss Nadine Fähndrich win the 55th Engadin Ski Marathon. For men, a smaller leading group can never break out, resulting in a big sprint of over 40 runners. Among women, Giuliana Werro led confidently for a long time, but then had to admit defeat in the sprint. 12,400 runners started the race in bright sunshine.

“It was very tough,” said winner Nadine Fähndrich, whose race was not without difficulties. “I had broken a stick in Surlej. I was immediately given a replacement, but as a result I missed the drink at the refreshment post.” However, Fähndrich maintained top positions throughout the race.

Zernezer Giuliana Werro, who won the Engadin in 2023 and finished second in 2024, was in the lead for a long time. Given Fähndrich's momentum, she tried to make a decision early and gained an advantage of up to 39 seconds. “I felt good, but I didn't know that I was leading and especially not with what advantage,” she said at the finish line. Nadine Fähndrich was better informed, who then got back to Werro with the help of Roman Schaad and won the sprint as expected.

Werro was nevertheless very happy about her third podium in a row. Frenchwoman Mélina Berthet finished third, just over 2 minutes behind.

The men had a very varied and exciting but not very fast race. “It was never too tough, I just had to stay in the top ten places,” said Norwegian winner Håvard Moseby. He literally beat his compatriot Sverre Dahlen Aspenes at the finish line in a photo finish. Valerio Grond from Davos finished third, who had shown a very active race right from the start.

In the Golan Heights, he was no longer able to fully follow an attack from Aspenes and a gap of a few meters opened up. “Once you're behind the curve before the last downhill run, it will be brutally difficult to move forward again,” Grond said of the decision. In the end, he missed the winner by half a second, but he is very happy about his podium finish.

12,398 runners had registered for the 55th Engadin Ski Marathon. After the two difficult events with too little snow in 2023 and the start move to Silvaplana 2024, the organizers are very satisfied with this. The brilliant weather and excellent snow conditions this Sunday will probably attract more cross-country skiers to Engadin again next year.

When asked why she had opted for the Engadin and against the fifties at the World Championships, winner Nadine Fähndrich was beaming: “It's unbelievably beautiful here.”
