Europe's highest regional airport in Samedan is to be modernized and developed. The infrastructure company Samedan Regional Airport has tendered a study contract for this purpose. A jury of experts reviewed the work of Hosoya Schaefer Architects and Blarer & Reber Architects voted as the winning project. It is now being developed into a construction project, which is then to be implemented in phases.

An initial development phase comprises measures to secure operations in the long term by replacing essential operationally relevant infrastructure. The “Landside” company building with terminal, control tower, office space, restoration and the entire control of people and goods is at the center of this phase. New helicopter hangars are being built southwest of it for REGA and other regional helicopter companies. It is planned to implement the first phase from 2021.

The regional airport in Samedan is of great importance for Engadin and the canton of Grisons, said District President Dr. Mario Cavigelli at the project presentation. As an employer and feeder for tourism, he is an important economic engine and as a basis for rescue and transport flights by local helicopter companies, he makes a significant contribution to security of supply in the region.

“The winning project impressed us with its spatial flexibility and functionality, clear design language and good profitability,” said Christian Meuli, President of the administrative commission of the infrastructure company. The modernization of the airport is also urgently needed for tourism, stressed Gerhard Walter, CEO of Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG: “An airport is a special calling card for a destination. It is important that our guests are received accordingly and that they leave a lasting impression even when leaving the Engadin.”

In order to further modernize operations, new halls for company vehicles and fire brigade as well as aircraft hangars will also be built northeast of the control tower in the later development phases. Parallel to the replacement of the high-rise buildings, the renovation and adaptation of apron areas, taxiways and parking spaces will also be implemented and technical systems will be brought up to date.

The winning project and the four other studies are now on display at Samedan Airport. The exhibition can be visited daily from 28.08. to 16.09.2018 during operating hours (08:00 to 19:00) of the regional airport on the first floor of the installations in Hangar 1 (registration at the C office).
