119 children from four countries took part in the second “Nicola Spirig Kids Cup” in St. Moritz on Saturday. In its second edition, the triathlon for girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 14 has already doubled the number of participants. On Sunday, the St. Moritz triathlon will take place over the sprint distance; Nicola Spirig will also be at the start.
“Bears”, “Capricorns”, “Eagles”, “Groundhogs” and “Ants” swam, biked and ran for the Nicola Spirig Kids Cup in St. Moritz on Saturday. St. Moritz opened its second triathlon weekend with the children's competition in five age categories.
“The great response from the children and parents is my greatest joy today,” Nicola Spirig summed up at the goal. “The children enjoyed the sport and they gave it their all: I've never seen so many exciting sprints before,” laughed the Olympic champion, who is world-renowned for her assertiveness in the final spurt.
The “Nicola Spirig Kids Cup” motivates children from all over Switzerland to participate in sport: In Bülach, Leysin, Sarnen, St. Moritz, Vevey and Locarno, events in the series will take place in 2015.
But it's not just children who are enthusiastic about triathlon in St. Moritz: On Sunday, 80 adults aged 14 and over will start the St. Moritz triathlon in sprint distance. The program includes 500 meters of swimming in Lake St. Moritz, 20 kilometers of cycling and 6.6 kilometers of running in the forests on Lake St. Moritz and Lake Staz.
Nicola Spirig herself is also at the start: Like various other top athletes who train in the Engadin, she uses the St. Moritz People's Triathlon as competition training.
