After a two-year break, Saturday marks the start of the biggest cross-country skiing festival in the Alps again. Around 14,000 cross-country skiers are expected to attend the Engadin Marathon Week 2022. The trails in Upper Engadin are in excellent condition and starting points are still available. The Engadin Marathon Week 2022 offers some new features.

The Engadin Marathon Week with the Engadin Women's Run, the Engadin Night Run, the Engadin Half Marathon and the Engadin Ski Marathon is the traditional highlight of the cross-country skiing season for thousands of cross-country skiing enthusiasts. Due to the pandemic, it could not take place twice. The anticipation of the four races in the unique natural scenery of the Upper Engadin and the innovations following the break forced by the pandemic is all the greater.

The Marathon Village and the issue of race numbers are visiting Pontresina for the first time this year. The marathon and half marathon in Maloja will now start in 29 waves and the route between Pontresina and Samedan will now be via Celerina.

New start procedure and route change to Pontresina

The new start procedure in 29 waves with a maximum of 500 people creates more space for individual participants and promises a reduction in waiting times and the fight for top starting places. Protecting the health of its participants and volunteers is a top priority for the Engadin Ski Marathon. The new wave start plays an important part in this.

The new route between Pontresina and Samedan will also benefit the participants. From Pontresina, the route changes over a new bridge to the left side of the Flaz river. It crosses the RhB railway line through a widened underpass and leads to an additional loop at the picturesque church of San Gian near Celerina. From there, the trail leads through the redesigned underpass of the cantonal road to the airfield level near Samedan. The new route is not only visually more attractive, it will also eliminate backlogs at the Muottas Muragl cable car base station.

High demand for launch sites

More than 11,000 participants have signed up for the Engadin Ski Marathon to date. These include world-class athletes such as Graubünden superstar Dario Cologna, who wants to crown his last competition season with a fifth victory at the Engadin Ski Marathon.

“We are very pleased with the current registration figures for the marathon. On marathon Sunday, almost 12,000 runners will probably set off on the most beautiful 42 kilometers of winter,” says Menduri Kasper, managing director of the Engadin Ski Marathon. “We expect between 600 and 1000 people to start the Engadin Women's Run and the Engadin Night Run.”

Certificate requirement abolished, mask requirement on buses and trains

Thanks to the recent easing of federal pandemic regulations, the certificate requirement for participants has been abolished. However, the organizer recommends that all participants wear a mask indoors and outdoors when many people come together. This applies in particular to start number spending and the start and finish areas of the four races.

The OC recommends that you put a new mask in the effects bag so that you have a mask handy after the races in the finish area and especially on the train and bus. Masks are still mandatory on public transport.

Engadin Marathon Week 2022 at a glance

The generously designed, new marathon village on Via Maistra in Pontresina invites you to relax and stroll from Thursday, March 10 to Saturday, March 12. Sponsors and partners of the Engadin Ski Marathon entertain with product presentations, consultations, workshops, tastings, product tests, games and refreshment stands.

As always, public transport with its numerous direct connections by train and bus is recommended. From Pontresina train station, the village with the Rondo Congress Center is just a 10-minute walk away, and public buses stop right in front of the Marathon Village. If you come with your own vehicle, you will find signposted parking spaces.
