The St. Moritz Winter Polo Tournament is getting a new sponsorship and a new name: “Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz” is the name of the world-famous traditional tournament on frozen Lake St. Moritz from next winter. It is organized by a new, broad-based sponsorship and a team consisting primarily of Engadin people.

The question about the future of the St. Moritz Winter Polo Tournament has been answered: A team led by Engadin Reto Gaudenzi, who once launched the tournament and then led it for twelve years, is organising the “Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz” from next winter. Well-known names from the Swiss polo scene are behind the new tournament organization: Piero Dillier, Thomas Rinderknecht, Werner Meier and Andy Küchel founded “Evviva St. Moritz Polo AG” together with Gaudenzi. Polo fans from all over the world were invited to subscribe for shares.
The response from national and international interested parties was very high, and the share capital was oversubscribed. The promoters have already started their work. The talks with potential main sponsors are very positive and the municipality of St. Moritz has agreed to have the tournament organized by the new sponsorship in the future. The first “Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz” can therefore be announced for January 30 to February 1, 2015.
Back to the roots
The winter tournament in St. Moritz has a very special significance: polo on snow was invented here over 30 years ago. “From the very beginning, St. Moritz has always been the best winter polo tournament in the world. The uncertainty about the future of this top sporting and social event has left us alone,” explains promoter Reto Gaudenzi. “Polo fans from all over the world have encouraged us to take over the St. Moritz tournament again and lead it into a secure future.”
In order to give the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz a long-term future, the tournament must be solidly financed, recognized in sport and society and supported by the population and tourism service providers in the valley. A new, very lean management structure, which, as in the early years, once again brings in more experts from the Engadin, is intended to promote the tournament's roots in the valley and among local volunteers.
