The intended closure of Lagalb was discussed at the Annual General Meeting of Engadin St. Moritz Mountains AG. Two entrepreneurs want to take over Lagalb with a new company and are looking for five million francs in share capital. On July 1, they want to announce whether Lagalb will continue to operate from next winter.
Together with the closure decision, Engadin St. Moritz Mountains AG also stated a year ago that it would discuss alternatives to a closure if they were economically viable for it. Talks were then held with various interested parties about continuing operations, but these have so far failed for economic reasons from the perspective of interested parties.
Two other interested parties came out to the public at Monday's Annual General Meeting: Entrepreneurs George Walliser and Rainer Good are offering shares in a new company for subscription from Tuesday.
The company is to be endowed with capital of five million francs, which Lagalb will take over and operate. The winter offer should be maintained or improved. Lagalb is also to be operated again in summer.
“We want to make Lagalb a downhill paradise for mountain bikers,” explained Walliser. The reactions of the population had shown that locals and guests were interested in Lagalb. Now they could get involved in a rescue.
However, municipalities are also in demand, which should support loss-making operations with contributions or benefits.
Walliser and Good want to announce on July 1 whether the new company has been founded and whether Lagalb can continue to operate from next winter. It won't be easy, said Walliser. “We have great respect for our task.”
If this initiative fails, Lagalb will not reopen after the end of the season on April 17.
