Swiss team leader Nadine Fähndrich travels to Engadin with the bronze sprint medal from the World Championships in Trondheim. The winner of the Engadin Ski Marathon 2018 has had a very strong season so far this winter. The duel between Maëlle Veyre and Giuliana Werro will receive particular attention. The Frenchwoman was temporarily removed from the ranking last year due to a positive test for fluorine wax, but was then relieved and declared the winner. Giuliana Werro, who won the Engadin in 2023 and was now second, lost out. Alina Meier is also credited with an exploit: The young sprinter from Davos has already finished in the top ten twice in the World Cup. The winner of last Sunday's women's run, Lea Fischer, and former top Swiss biathlete Selina Gasparin are also at the start.
Strong men's field
A former biathlete also stands out on the men's list of favorites: Frenchman Martin Fourcade was a five-time Olympic champion and thirteen-time world champion. In any case, the French traditionally have a strong presence in the Engadin. Arnaud Chautemps, winner 2023, and World Cup sprinter Renaud Jay are among the favorites. Norway is also strong: world-class printer Sindre Bjørnestad Skar is also considered a good distance runner and Magne Haga won the Engadin last winter.
Finally, Håvard Moseby was fifth in this year's Tour de Ski. The eyes of Swiss cross-country skiing fans are probably on Valerio Grond in particular. He has made great progress in the distance sector and has shown that he is in good shape with several top ten finishes in the World Cup. One promising young athlete is Scuoler Noe Näff. He finished a good twentieth at the World Sprint Championships.
Roman Alder and Jannik Riebli will also be expected. The two know the route well and, together with numerous young Swiss talent, will take advantage of the opportunity to stage themselves in front of a local audience at the biggest cross-country skiing race in the Alps.
Dream conditions for night running and marathons
Before the Engadin Ski Marathon runs on Sunday, more than 800 participants will meet on Thursday for the 7th Engadin Night Run. With headlamps, they will travel the 17 kilometers from Sils to Pontresina. The weather forecasts look very good: The Engadin starry sky and the moon should be easy to see. Registrations for the Engadin Night Run are accepted online up to two hours before the start.
Thanks to excellent snow conditions and good weather forecasts, participants are still signing up for the Engadin ski marathon and half marathon. The closing date for entries is on Saturday at 17:00.
By Tuesday afternoon, a good 12,100 runners had registered.
