Even Northug and Mari Eide won the heavily staffed Engadin night sprint in St. Moritz. Two days before the Engadin Ski Marathon, the two Norwegians prevailed in exciting final runs on Friday evening. Lichtblick from a Swiss perspective, Davos Alina Meier was in second place among women. Rahel Imoberdorf, Joeri Kindschi and Roman Furger made it to the finals under the clear Engadin evening sky, but had no chance there.

He's hoping for a sprint decision in Sunday's marathon, laughed Even, the youngest of the three Northug brothers, after his sprint victory on Friday evening in the St. Moritz Kurpark. In his final run, the 21-year-old was surprisingly superior to his compatriot Eirik Brandsdal. Brandsdal was the top favorite - he had only won the World Cup sprint in Drammen, Norway, on Wednesday.
Behind the two Norwegians, Frenchmen Valentin Chauvin and Bastien Buttin were ahead of the two Swiss guys Roman Furger and Joeri Kindschi. Furger was well involved in the final race before he fell in third place and had to bury all hopes of a podium finish.
Norwegian Mari Eide met the high expectations for women. In the final run, she didn't let anything burn and moved the field into places. Behind her, the young Davos woman Alina Meier surprisingly made it to second place. Meier was still at the back of the field in the first round of the final round, but then cleverly pushed himself into the front rows and narrowly defended second place against German Elisabeth Schicho.
After the run, the woman from Graubünden could hardly believe her luck. Rahel Imoberdorf managed to qualify for the final, but the Valais woman was never able to intervene in the decision.
In addition to the elite athletes, young people from the region fought for rank and honor. Among the girls, Nina Cantieni (Samedan, U10), Fiona Triebs (Zernez, U14) and Nadja Kälin (Samedan, U16) won. Among the boys, Mario Fröhlich (Ftan, U10), Nö Näff (Scuol, U14) and Jovin Gruber (Davos, U16) were victorious and were celebrated by hundreds of spectators.
On Sunday, the Engadin Marathon week comes to an end with the Engadin Ski Marathon. As with the sprint, Norway, France and Switzerland can probably have the highest hopes of winning. From a Swiss perspective, two trump cards could stand out, which remained unlucky in the final today: Rahel Imoberdorf is just as much a favorite as Roman Furger. Whether Even Northug will be able to intervene in the sprint decision on Sunday remains an open question at least.
The Engadin Night Sprint St. Moritz is an event by St. Moritz Sport in collaboration with the Engadin Ski Marathon.
