Top Swiss cross-country skier Dario Cologna is taking part in the 49th Engadin Ski Marathon. As he did last winter, he refrained from classic races and came to Engadin in return. Dario Cologna won the Engadin Ski Marathon in 2007 and 2010; in 2016, in a promising position, he broke a stick just before the finish line.

Due to muscular problems in his left calf, Dario Cologna has already refrained from the world championship races in classic style. In Lahti, Cologna will only start tomorrow Friday with the relay and over 50 km of skating on Sunday. After the World Cup, he will also forego the 50 km classic in Oslo.
The fact that Dario Cologna is not currently taking part in classic races is a stroke of luck for the Engadin Ski Marathon. The Olympic champion and world champion demonstrated last year that he absolutely wanted to win the “Engadin” a third time: running in the top group, but he broke a stick in the last bends before the final spurt and was no longer able to intervene in the decision.
Menduri Kasper, managing director of the Engadin Ski Marathon, regrets Cologna's health problems. “However, we are very pleased to welcome this exceptional local athlete to our start,” says Kasper.
“We wish Dario all the best for tomorrow's relay and the 50 km skating world championship race on Sunday and are already looking forward to his return appearance in Engadin.”
