In a new record time, Rahel Imoberdorf from Münster (VS) won the 19th Engadin Women's Run. The Valaisan clearly distances Flurina Eichholzer (Zernez). Sandra Wagenführ (Davos Platz) is third. A record number of 1,158 women had signed up. This makes the Engadin Women's Run the second-largest cross-country race in Switzerland after the Engadin Ski Marathon.
After a cold night, under blue skies and with a slight tailwind, the conditions were ideal for a fast race. Rahel Imoberdorf (32), who won the Engadin Women's Race in 2015 and finished second last year, made it clear from the start that the road to victory had to pass her by. On the 17-kilometer route from Samedan to S-chanf, she ran confidently and gained an advantage of 1,41.9 minutes in the end.
Flurina Eichholzer had set herself apart from the pursuers and came in clear second.
In the sprint for third place, Davos Sandra Wagenführ prevailed against Carla Wohler (Spiez), Rebecca Vontobel (Wald ZH) and Michela Benzoni (Samedan). Biathlete Irene Cadurisch (Maloja) finished seventh, who used the women's run as a training session before the last World Cups and Championships in the coming weeks. Of the 1,158 registered women, 1,076 had started, which was also a record.
Engadin marathon week launched
The 19th Engadin Women's Run opened the traditional Engadin Marathon week, which will culminate in the 50th Engadin Ski Marathon next Sunday. 14,200 participants had already registered for the big anniversary run in January, after which registration had to be closed.
There are still free starting places for the second Engadin night run from Sils to Pontresina on Thursday evening. Almost 700 participants have already registered.
Several world-class printers are once again expected for Friday's 38th Engadin night sprint. Young athletes are also at the start of attractive sprint races in the St. Moritz Kurpark. They can secure their starting places at the Youth Sprint in Samedan on Wednesday.
