Nine years before the Winter Olympics and Paralympics were held in Grisons, over 1000 volunteers have already signed up for assignments. Graubünden's expectations for 2022 were thus far exceeded. A total of over 20,000 volunteers are needed to host the 2022 Winter Games. Holding the Winter Olympics will underline and sustainably promote the importance of volunteer work in Swiss society beyond sport.
Just four weeks ago, Graubünden called on volunteers in 2022 to register for the candidature phase, the development phase or the holding of the Olympic Games and Paralympics. Since then, over a thousand people from all over Switzerland have already expressed their willingness to volunteer for Graubünden in 2022. To register volunteers, Graubünden is working with Swiss Olympic Volunteer, a Swiss Olympic platform, in 2022. “The importance of volunteer work for sport cannot be overemphasized at all.
Neither major events nor smaller events are possible without them,” says Gian Gilli, Director of Graubünden 2022. “The London Summer Games have impressively shown how important and how positive the role of volunteers is at such a major event. But the junior and training operations of virtually every sports club would also come to a complete standstill without the involvement of 735,000 volunteers.” Volunteer work is also extremely important outside of sport. It is an integral part of social, cultural and social Switzerland.
The Winter Olympics in Switzerland would be a showcase for volunteer work far beyond sport. They would underline their central role in many areas of society. The social image of volunteer work could thus be sustainably strengthened and a new generation of volunteers could be inspired to work for the general public.
