28 Swiss photographers auctioned off their own works in Zurich on Friday, raising 40,000 francs for reconstruction projects in the Bondo area. City President Corine Mauch and Mayor Anna Giacometti underlined the close ties between Zurich and Bergell.
The auction of almost 30 works by Swiss photographers on Friday evening in Zurich raised a sum of 40,000 francs. It is being made available to the municipality of Bregaglia for reconstruction in Bondo, Spino, Sottoponte and Promontogno.
“There is no longer a bridge between the villages of Promontogno and Bondo,” said Bergell municipality president Anna Giacometti, giving an example of such a project. Older people in particular would have to make a long detour to go shopping on foot. “We want to reopen this connection as quickly as possible.”
“Bergell and Bergeller inspire us all, and now we have been able to give something back,” said Gian Andri Giovanoli, initiator of the campaign, at the end of the evening in Zurich's Löwenbräu area. He thanked the City of Zurich, the Migros Genossenschaftsbund, Christie's auction house and the photographers involved for the successful campaign.
Guests at the event included Zurich City President Corine Mauch and city councilors Filippo Leutenegger and Andres Türler.
In her welcome note, Mauch underlined the immediate assistance provided by ewz to Zurich: “Because of the close ties with Bergell, it was a matter of course for ewz to provide immediate aid within its means.” The ewz operates several hydroelectric power plants and also the local power supply in Bergell, explained Andres Türler.
Experts from ewz had immediately provided emergency power units after the debris flows and ensured that the damaged power supply was quickly working again.
On behalf of the Bergell population, Anna Giacometti said that solidarity from all over Switzerland had helped Bergell overcome the difficult situation since August. The photographers' action is another good example of this.
