A vote of confidence in Switzerland as host country

The awarding of the 2017 Alpine Ski World Championships to St. Moritz is a positive sign of Switzerland's bid for the Olympics in Grisons 2022. By choosing St. Moritz, the FIS Ski Association has given a clear vote for Switzerland as the host country of major sporting events. The 2017 World Ski Championships give Switzerland the opportunity to show the sports world how it can hold a major sporting event at the highest level in harmony with nature and as a friendly host.

The award decision of the FIS ski association has for the candidacy Graubünden 2022 A particular signal effect: Hardly any association is as familiar with Switzerland's strengths and weaknesses as a host of world-class sporting events as well as FIS. Since the 2003 World Ski Championships, St. Moritz has held Ski World Cups every year and the Cross-Country World Cup has been playing in Davos for over 20 years. Together with many other Swiss sports organizers, the two towns of Graubünden have proven how extensive the know-how and how warm the hospitality in our country is.

The timing of the 2017 World Ski Championships is perfect for the Grisons 2022 bid: When the IOC makes a decision in summer 2015, the organization will already be very advanced in 2017 and will thus create additional confidence in the competence and qualities of the Swiss Olympic candidacy. And holding the 2022 Olympic Games will be able to benefit greatly from the renewed know-how gained at the 2017 World Ski Championships.

“The awarding of the 2017 World Ski Championships to St. Moritz shows that the quality of the Swiss organization is highly appreciated,” says Gian Gilli, Director of Grisons 2022. Gilli was already operational manager at the 2003 World Ski Championships and has followed the current application very closely. “This successful candidacy for the World Ski Championships is vivid proof of the long-term effects of a major event in Switzerland. Many members of the team, from volunteers to presidents, were already there in 2003, new and very good people were added. Together, they provide a top event in the Ski World Cup every year and are also available when there is a need.”

The Grisons Association 2022 warmly congratulates the Candidacy Committee and the people of St. Moritz on the positive outcome of the award, which represents a great vote of confidence.
