Swiss water ambassador and expedition swimmer Ernst Bromeis wants to swim 800 kilometers across Lake Baikal in Siberia. With his “Expedition Baikal”, he wants to attract water ambassadors worldwide who are committed to the most precious resource on planet Earth.

At the opening of the “Open Forum” at the World Economic Forum Davos, water ambassador Ernst Bromeis (51) presented his new campaign for more water ambassadors around the world. “The world needs many water ambassadors, because water is its most important means of survival,” he told more than 200 listeners and numerous media professionals from all over the world. To promote his cause, he wants to swim across Siberian Lake Baikal over a total distance of 800 kilometers next summer.
“I approach my task with great respect. The expedition through this inland sea is unlike anything before,” said Bromeis, who swam the entire length of the Rhine for the first time in 2014. Bromeis will swim without an accompanying boat and will be accompanied ashore by a team of just three to four people. “I also have great cultural respect for Lake Baikal. It is the largest drinking water reserve in the world. Local residents call it “the holy sea,” it is a water wonder of the world.”
More water ambassadors for the world
Bromeis presented his new campaign “Water touches us all — become a water ambassador!” at Open Forum Davos! before. He has set himself the goal of establishing a worldwide movement of water ambassadors. “Anyone can become a water ambassador, regardless of origin, education or wealth,” says Bromeis. “Water touches us all and affects us all.”
Bromeis is supported by numerous partners in his “Baikal Expedition”. ETH Zurich and the University of Basel are his research partners.
The international water technology group BWT supports its campaign and expedition not only as a presenting sponsor, but also with its worldwide network. “Together, we provide food for thought and raise awareness that water is a resource worth protecting,” says Lutz Hübner, responsible for Group-wide marketing at BWT. “BWT water treatment solutions help protect the environment and reduce the amount of plastic waste.” Oris watches, Aquasphere, Haglöfs and Transa support Bromeis as sponsors and with equipment, some of which is specially manufactured to meet his needs.
On site in Siberia, the expedition is supported by activists from the globally active NGO “Living Lakes.” The World Economic Forum WEF has invited Bromeis to launch its new campaign at this year's annual meeting in Davos and to discuss his concerns with participants.
Five theses about water
“The Blue Wonder” is the movement of Swiss Water Ambassador Ernst Bromeis. In his book “Every drop counts”, he formulated five theses on the subject of water: Water is destructible and vulnerable, water is relevant to the climate, water is the right of all of us to live, water is our existence, water is sensual.
Bromeis (51) set himself up as a water ambassador in 2008 and has since attracted international attention as an expedition swimmer. In 2014, he swam across the entire length of the Rhine for the first time.
His expeditions give Bromeis the public attention he needs to draw attention to his concerns.
