The evacuation of Brienz/Brinzauls will be lifted on Monday

The Graubünden mountain village of Brienz/Brinzauls can be lived in and entered normally again from next Monday. The movements measured on the mountain high above the village have calmed down in the last eight weeks to such an extent that the current entry ban and evacuation can be lifted after 62 weeks.

The Albula/Alvra municipal management team has decided to lift the ban on entry to the area around Brienz/Brinzauls that has been in force since November 17, 2024. The acute risk from the rockfall area high above the village has been reduced to such an extent since the debris flow at the end of November 2025 that a permanent stay in the village is safe again.

Starting tomorrow, Friday, January 23, the village can be prepared for the evacuation to be lifted. It changes from the RED phase to the ORANGE phase. From Friday night, those affected by evacuation will be able to spend the night in the village again. However, the roads and roads to Brienz/Brinzauls remain closed to the general public and the access ban will also remain in place until and including Sunday.

On Monday morning, January 26, at 6:00 a.m., the area with the village will switch back to the GREEN phase. The entry ban is lifted, the village can be inhabited and entered normally again and the agricultural land in the area can be freely cultivated again. The danger zone above the village, where there is a risk of rockfall, blockage and splinters, remains blocked. The zone is marked in the terrain and must be respected at all costs.

Access to the village

From Friday, 09:00, evacuees from Brienz/Brinzauls can continuously reach the village via the two checkpoints Vazerol and Belfort and also spend the night there.

With the lifting of the entry ban from Monday, 06:00 a.m., access to and access to Brienz/Brinzauls will be possible again. However, the road between Brienz/Brinzauls and Vazerol remains closed to general through traffic because it is too narrow as a thoroughfare for safety reasons.

Access to the village is only possible via the Brienz road from Surava/Alvaneu. Driving on the Vazerol-Brienz/Brinzauls road requires a sticker, which can be applied for from the Albula/Alvra municipal administration from February 6. Vignettes that have already been distributed remain valid.

The post bus line 183 between Lenzerheide and Davos will run again via Brienz/Brinzauls from Monday.

  • The evacuation and entry ban continue to exist.
  • The access roads and roads to Brienz/Brinzauls remain blocked.
  • Residents and owners/permanent users of second homes have access to the village and can also spend the night there.
