A new lease of life for the Hotel La Margna in St. Moritz

Plans are under way to refurbish Hotel La Margna in St. Moritz and to re-launch it as a boutique hotel. The intention is, that the historic building will be completely renovated to include a new annex building housing hotel rooms and a spacious spa. The extension to the building cannot, however, be built unless the site is re-classified as a ‘hotel zone’. On 9 April, the project will be made available for public inspection — the people of St. Moritz will decide on the re-zoning proposal in a referendum to be held in the summer of 2015.

The plan is to re-launch La Margna and breathe new life into the century-old hotel, which lies next to the St. Moritz train station. Grace Hotels, a privately owned international hotel group, acquired the hotel in 2013. The proposed renovation will preserve and restore the building’s essential historic elements such as the façade, the shape of the roof, and the public rooms.

The hotel rooms on the upper levels will be upgraded to conform to modern standards in terms of comfort, space, bathroom amenities, and safety. New rooms would also be built in the annex on the hotel’s west side. The project provides for approximately the same number of rooms on completion as exist today, but their standard and provision of amenities will be significantly higher. The new annex is also designed to incorporate a spacious spa and an underground car park.

The renovation and transformation will increase the net built area from approximately 5,000m2 to about 8,000m2. This expansion of the plot can only be achieved if the property is re-classified as a hotel zone. On 9 April, full details of the project will be available for public scrutiny as part of a 30-day consultation period. During this period, interested parties are welcome to express their thoughts and opinions on the project to the municipality of St. Moritz. Following the public consultation, and ahead of the referendum, the project will be discussed in the municipality’s executive and legislative bodies.

The Grace Hotels Concept for La Margna

As its owners and managers, Grace Hotels (www.gracehotels.com) has expressed its long-term commitment to the Hotel La Margna. In particular, the group plans to operate the hotel for approx. 10 months of the year. Grace Hotels currently comprises 12 boutique hotels in six countries. Each hotel is unique in its architecture and designed to provide guests with a wholly authentic experience of its locality. The hotels are characterised by elegant simplicity rather than high luxury. The restored La Margna will have three restaurants, all open to the public.
