Magic moments on the marathon course in the Engadin

Thursday evening saw 810 competitors at the start in Sils for the second Engadin Night Race. For most of the participants, it was less about the final ranking than the enjoyment of the unique atmosphere of the race. The Finn Kari Varis took home the victory of the men's race, the women's race was won by Klara Moravcova from the Czech Republic.

Just in its second edition, the Engadin Night Race is already a crowd-puller, attracting 810 men and women to compete on the 17 kilometres from Sils to Pontresina through the Engadin night. Last year's premiere had seen 469 participants. There were but smiling faces at the finishing line—even the top athletes raved about the unique character of the race.

Local athlete Curdin Perl was determined to repeat his triumph of the year before and to win the Engadin Night Race for a second time in a row. Just a few kilometres from the start, he and a few others had broken away; Perl remained among the front runners at all times. Having reached the Staz forest, he tried to force the decision, but the Finn Kari Varis and the Norwegian Petter Soleng Skistad kept right on his heels.

Towards the end of the race, the three of them had a lead of one minute. Perl was still leading down the final run and the last hairpin bend before the finishing line. Caught off-guard for a split second by the two Scandinavian racers at this critical junction, they both overtook the local defender who in the end came in third. He must not have studied the details of the course carefully enough, he said jokingly to an interviewer at the finish.

Among the women, it was a more clear-cut decision: Klara Moravkova from the Czech Republic crossed the finishing line more than 1.25 minutes ahead of Olga Nazarova from Russia. Ursina Badilatti, unexpectedly, came in third. Despite lagging behind almost four minutes behind the winner, she was overjoyed. The young woman from Pushlav, who had retired from competitive racing back in 2013, had entered the race without any preparation whatsoever and had not been expecting a top position.
